2013 Sport Class “Rookie” School – Thrills Without the Spills After nine years of crewing for friends in the Sport Class and watching racers circle the course at Stead field in front of adoring fans (many in Orange), I finally bit the bullet and signed up for the 2013 Pylon Racing Seminar and FAST formation clinic. I arrived in Race 52, a borrowed Lancair Legacy named “Poncho” (built and owned by Jim “JT” Thomas), on Sunday afternoon ahead of some impressive afternoon thunderstorms and was quickly tucked away into the cavernous Sport Class hangar on the west end of the ramp.

19Fastest Glass!!!! Race 39 Brings home win….

Glasair that is! Jeff LaVelle and his one man crew Grant Samanski have methodically refined their Glasair III over the past 4 years and in 2012 it paid off. While Jeff did not offically record speeds over 400 mph, he was unofficially clocked at 403mph during his final Gold race. Keeping last year winner John Parker at bay on Sunday, Jeff will bring home the 2012 Gold win and quite allot of nasayers about just how fast the Glasair III can go.

There is a little good news that can be gleaned from the September air races and that is we won the only Sport Gold Race that was completed. The Thursday race was canceled when Mike Dacey had an engine failure on takeoff and put his Venture down in the infield. The good news is that Mike is back home in San Louis Obispo facing a long recovery. Thanks to many of you who donated to fly him back in a King Air arranged by Kevin Eldredge. As much as I would like to, of course, it is impossible to avoid touching on the unpredictable tragic event with our friend Jimmy Leeward that happened on Friday just after we won the Sport Gold. Our condolences go out to everyone affected by this tragic accident.

While the race was a bust due to weather at the finish line we all had pleanty of fun just getting to Dayton for the Airventure Cup Race. Highlight was the two hour foour ship flight in with race 5, 13, 41, and 42. Low was my canopy deciding it didn’t want to race at the start! Check in with the Sport Class Page on Facebook for video I am working on of flight out from California. Great fun.
